Calling all JPs! RTÉ are looking for every John Paul in Ireland for a new documentary

Rudi Kinsella

John Paul

John Pauls of the country, RTÉ needs you.

Are you a John Paul? Are you lucky enough to know a John Paul? Are you married to a John Paul? Or the friend of a John Paul? Because if so, it could be your chance for your big break on TV.

The producers of a new RTÉ One documentary are looking for anyone who was named after the 1979 papal visit of Pope John Paul II. One in 10 baby boys born in 1980 were named John Paul after the pontiff’s historic visit, which makes sense as over one million Irish people turned up to see him. That’s over one quarter of the population at the time.

Can we expect thousands of babies to be named Francis next year after the pope’s planned visit to Ireland this Summer? Who knows…

The documentary intends to discuss a number of things with the John Pauls that they acquire. They want their take on everything from Italia 90 to the passing of the same-sex marriage referendum. These JPs have seen some huge changes in this country, and their lives mark four very different generations in Ireland. Their voices will be heard. Finally!
