WATCH: The creator of The Simpsons and Futurama is back with his first new show in 19 years

Dave Hanratty

Disenchantment

Think of it like a cartoon Game of Thrones, only with less terrifying bloodshed.

Although, the opening scenes of Disenchantment, Matt Groening’s first new TV show in 19 years, do get a little bit messy.

Having caused a violent disaster at her own wedding, hard-drinking Princess Bean sets off in search of her own destiny as misadventure ensues.

With his old charges The Simpsons off working on the 29th instalment of their Halloween-friendly Treehouse of Horror tales, Groening has opted to tackle the Dark Ages.

Dropping on Netflix next month, Disenchantment is set in the fictional medieval kingdom of Dreamland, and features a fairly familiar animation style.

The voice cast includes Abbi Jacobson (Broad City, Bojack Horseman) as Bean, Eric Andre (Don’t Trust The B in Apartment 23, The Eric Andre Show) and John DiMaggio (who famously voiced Bender in Futurama, among others).

Also set to feature are Matt Berry of The IT Crowd and Toast of London fame, Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh and previous Groening collaborators Maurice LaMarche, David Herman and Tress MacNeille.

20 episodes of the new show have been ordered by Netflix, with the first 10 hitting the streaming service on 17 August.
