Their audience turned out to be a lot greater than they had originally intended.

News reports on RTÉ have developed something of a habit of going viral in recent years.

All these years on, the poor unfortunate man who slipped on the ice is still an Internet sensation and if there is a weather report that gained more traction around the globe than Teresa Mannion’s famous end-of-the-world broadcast from Galway then we have yet to see it.

2017 may have found its viral RTÉ News moment on Thursday night, when a couple of amorous youngsters in Portlaoise were captured in the background of Ciaran Mullooly’s news report on the Six One news.

Public exposure of their affection might not bother this particular couple all that much, however, because after they had locked lips, the footage showed that they had asked a friend to capture the moment on camera.

We’re not sure their intended audience was meant to include the entire country, but hey, if this is just the blossoming of a long-term romance, it could be a nice story to tell the grandkids.

The moment can be seen at the 21:10 mark in the original report on the RTÉ Player here.
