Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 31 October) is The Far Country, the 1955 Western starring Hollywood icon James Stewart (It's a Wonderful Life, Rear Window, Vertigo).
Set at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush in 1896, the film follows cowboy Jeff Webster (Stewart) and his partner, Ben Tatum (Oscar-winner Walter Brennan - Rio Bravo, To Have and Have Not), who want in on the action.
As such, they decide to drive their cattle from Wyoming through Alaska to Yukon in Canada.
On their journey, however, the two run afoul of crooked lawman Gannon (John McIntire - The Asphalt Jungle, Psycho), who vows revenge when they escape him.
"After travelling through all manner of terrain, Webster and Tatum finally arrive at their destination. But Gannon has business in the town, and he intends to make good on his promise," the plot synopsis adds.
The fourth of five Westerns that leading man Stewart made with the director Anthony Mann (the others including The Man From Laramie and Winchester '73), The Far Country is noteworthy for being one of the few oaters to be set partially in Alaska.
The movie has been praised for Stewart's leading turn as an anti-hero, its scenery and its rich themes, with it currently holding a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Airing as part of TG4's Friday night Western slot, you can catch The Far Country on the Irish channel at 9.05pm. The film is also available to purchase on the Sky Store.
