These have been voted as the 10 saddest animated films of all time

JOE

Just the thought of some of these are making us sad.

No matter what age you are, there will always be that one film that gets you. Whether it makes you feel a bit sad or you bawl at a certain scene, no one can escape their feelings when it comes to certain animated films.

We recently gave you a list of kid’s films that teach us life lessons, and unsurprisingly, a few of them feature on this list too.

A poll on IMDb asks users to vote for the saddest animated movie, and to date it has received over 3000 responses.

Here is a list of the top ten and what makes them so sad (contains spoilers).

1. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

The critically acclaimed Japanese film is widely known as a heartbreaking anti-war film. The story is about a boy and his little sister who have only each other during the war. It is credited for being honest and raw about death and loss, meaning that it often takes the top spot on sad-film lists.

People have described Grave of the Fireflies as the best film you’ll only watch once.

 2. Up (2009)

The thing about this brilliant film is that it is very positive and bright for the most part, but people just can’t move past the first heartbreaking scene.

The beauty of this film is that it gives us a full picture of Carl’s life with Ellie within the first 6 minutes, all their ups and downs. Even after the film becomes fun and balloon filled, we just can’t help but feel sad for Carl because he has to live without Ellie.

3. Toy Story 3 (2010)

People who grew up watching the previous Toy Story films probably found this movie far sadder than most kids did.

The film helped many people reconnect with their childhoods, but not for long. Even Andy is all grown up, which does something to adult viewers. “If he’s all grown up and mature, does that mean my childhood is over too?”

4. The Lion King (1994)

The tragic scene is The Lion King where Mufasa dies is something no one ever really gets over.

From the music to Simba’s voice as he holds back tears to the fact that Mufasa promised him it would all be okay as long as he was around. All we can really say about this one is that we hate Scar.

5. Bambi (1942)

This film can’t be spoken about without discussing the tragic scene where Bambi’s mother is shot. Similarly to The Lion King it’s the music and Bambi’s calling out for his mother that hits you. If this film didn’t affect you, you’re made of stone.

6. The Iron Giant (1999)

This tale is about an unlikely friendship between a young boy and an alien robot. It is, like Grave of the Fireflies an anti-war story.

A lot of the other films on the list have tragic scenes somewhere in the middle but this one hits you right at the end.

7. The Fox and the Hound (1981)

The tale of forbidden friendship, is probably more heartbreaking than any forbidden love story. Some of the sadness in this film lies with the fact that it doesn’t go the way it’s expected.

Although it is somewhat of a happy ending, it’s just not the result viewers hope to see.

8. Mary and Max (2009)

This is probably the least known film on the list, this is a film about an 8-year-old girl from Australia who befriends a 44-year-old pen-pan from New York.

Both characters are quite troubled and find solace in discussing their problems with each other. It is based on a true story, which always makes sad films even sadder.

9. WALL-E (2008)

The tragedy behind this film isn’t as much about one character’s sadness as it is about a whole population.

The film taught many people about looking after the environment around them and how, if they don’t, there won’t be much of an environment left.

Also the love story between the robots is pretty emotional.

10. Big Hero 6 (2014)

This film deals with a lot of grief from the beginning, which instantly make it a difficult but touching film to watch.

The way grief is dealt with and discussed in the film has been praised by critics, but it doesn’t make it any easier to watch.
