A top-secret horror plus 7 more movies and shows to watch this week

Rory Cashin

All of the info on all of the new movies and shows you should be watching and avoiding this week.

Some big – BIG! – releases in Irish cinemas as well as on your TV, so let us get right to it, shall we?

The latest episode of The Big Reviewski can be watched in full below or you can skip to the cinema reviews (5:18), home entertainment recommendations (15:40), and classic re-watches (21:10).

Here are the new cinema releases, which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 10 September.

MALIGNANT

James Wan knows horror. He’s the guy who brought us Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring Universe! So when he decides that he wants to keep his cards close to his chest, we’ll allow it, because he’s already got our attention by telling us he’s giving us a new horror. All we know so far is that it involves a woman (Annabelle Wallis) who is plagued by visions of grizzly murders, only to discover they might actually be happening in real life…

COPSHOP

Imagine if Quentin Tarantino decided to remake Assault On Precinct 13, and you’re more or less there. A man on the run (Frank Grillo) gets himself purposefully arrested by a young police officer (Alexis Louder) in order to be securely locked up, only to find himself sharing a jail cell with the very man (Gerard Butler) who has been assigned to kill him.

Check out our interview with Butler and Louder right here:

HERSELF

One of the best Irish films in recent years, it revolves around a single mother (Claire Dunne) who can’t get a proper foot on the property ladder, so decides to tackle the problem in a very unique manner. Co-stars include Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones), Ian Lloyd Anderson (Dublin Oldschool) and Harriet Walter (Succession).

Check out our interview with Dunne right here:

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

AMERICAN HORROR STORIES

A spin-off of the hugely popular American Horror Story series, this is also an anthology season, but unlike the original AHS (which told one story across one season), each episode of American Horror Stories will tell a different spooky tale.

American Horror Stories is available to watch on Disney+. Check out our top picks for Disney+ for the month of September right here.

KATE

Have you ever seen Crank? Well, this is kiiiiiiind of that, except Jason Statham has been replaced by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She plays one of the world’s best assassins, but when she blows her latest mission, she discovers her employers have poisoned her, giving her just 24 hours to live. So with her final day on Earth, she sets about getting revenge on everyone who has done her wrong.

Kate is available to watch on Netflix. Check out our list of all of the new releases on Netflix for the month of September right here.

And finally, the amazingly exciting Pizza And A Movie section…

Here are this week’s picks, with the vote once again going up on JOE’s Instagram channel, so keep an eye out on that to have your say!

Rory’s Pick – THE TRUMAN SHOW

The movie that made us all realise that Jim Carrey could actually ACT, it is crazy how prescient this story has turned out to be. In a world where we have all become somewhat obsessed with reality TV, The Truman Show is the ultimate reality TV show, albeit one which gets across the humour, the heartbreak and the endurance of the human spirit.

The Truman Show has been added to Netflix this week.

Eoghan’s Pick – WALK THE LINE

Reece Witherspoon picked up the Best Actress Oscar for her turn as June Carter in this biopic that looks at the tumultuous relationship she had with Johnny Cash, here played by Joaquin Phoenix. One of the best biopics of recent years, and an absolute must-watch for fans of the genre (and the music!).

Walk The Line has been added to Disney+ this week.
