Video: The new trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire looks very cool

It’s probably not a great time of the year to have to jealously look at all those chiselled six packs but for now, just enjoy a taster of what looks like an excellent follow up to the original movie.

It’s probably not a great time of the year to have to jealously look at all those chiselled six packs but for now, just enjoy a taster of what looks like an excellent follow up to the original movie.

That original movie, 300, starring Gerard Butler as the great King Leonidas of Sparta, was one of the most popular fantasy films of the noughties and attracted a huge cult following as well as countless articles on how to work yourself into the ridiculous shape that Butler and the rest of the Spartans had got themselves into for the movie.

Butler isn’t back for the sequel – the fact that his character is, you know, dead, kind of put paid to that – but his absence is compensated for by the inclusion of the lovely Eva Green and the return of Rodrigo Santoro (King Xerxes) and Lena Headley (Queen Gorgo), who has gone to onto great things in Game of Thrones since the original.

The Spartans are obviously quite keen on revenge after Leonidas’ death in this sequel – which takes place before (charting Xerxes path to becoming the ‘God King’), during and after the events of the original and you can expect similar amounts of blood, huge battles and blatant expressions of male machismo this time around.

And hey, you might even have got around to sculpting a six-pack of your own by the time the movie is released early in March.
