Video: Will Ferrell and Chad Smith had their long-awaited drum-off on Jimmy Fallon last night

‘That was cute. Do you play for the lukewarm Chili Peppers?’

Pretty much nobody has been able to tell funny man Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith apart for years – had anyone actually seen them in the same room before last night? – so the only feasible way to distinguish one from the other was to pit them against each other in a drum-off staged on Jimmy Fallon’s show last night.

Surely, as the drummer for one of the biggest bands in the world, Smith’s percussion abilities would leave Ferrell in the shade, right? As it turns out, that wasn’t the case at all because Ferrell was able to match his doppelganger and then some… probably because Smith was actually playing Ferrell’s drum parts all along, although you couldn’t actually see as much on camera.

If the drum-off itself wasn’t entertaining enough, it reached another level at the end when the rest of the Red Hot Chili Peppers joined Smith on stage for a rendition of Blue Oyster Cult’s ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper,’ a song parodied by Ferrell in a famous Saturday Night Live ‘More Cowbell’ sketch from a few years back.

Brilliant entertainment.
