“I’ve been practising Tee-Shock all week long.”
And, to be fair to the reporter from Fox 29, he wasn’t far off the correct pronunciation when he encountered Enda Kenny in Philadephia on Sunday.
Kenny was in the city at the start of his tour of the United States this week, which will also include a meeting with US president Donald Trump at the White House on Friday.
In a speech at the Famine Memorial in Philadelphia at the weekend, Kenny confirmed that the government is to go ahead with plans to hold a referendum to allow Irish citizens living outside of Ireland to vote in presidential elections.
The Taoiseach also took in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in the city on Sunday and while there, he encountered a reporter looking for the correct pronunciation of the word ‘Taoiseach’ which, the reporter said, he had practising for a week in advance.
Kenny commended his efforts and went on to pronounce it phonetically, saying “it will be t-h-e-e-s-h-o-c” and asking the reporter to repeat it for the benefit of those watching.

Today, meanwhile, Kenny was in Boston, where he met with Mayor Marty Walsh, with whom he said he shared a great meeting in which business and immigration were amongst the items on the agenda.
