WATCH: The Shawshank Redemption reimagined as a bromantic comedy is fantastic

Conor Heneghan

“You can put a man behind bars but you can’t lock up his heart.”

The Shawshank Redemption is widely and deservedly regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time.

It is a harrowing tale of the effect that long-term institutionalisation can have on a man and yet manages to be incredibly uplifting at the same time.

It is, without fail, THE choice of professional sportspeople when asked to select their ‘favourite movie’ in light-hearted questionnaires.

One thing it isn’t is a romantic comedy. Or at least it wasn’t until, with a bit of clever editing and narration, the folks at Cinefix reimagined it as a love story of sorts between the two central characters, Ellis Boyd ‘Red’ Redding (Morgan Freeman) and Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins).

It’s Shawshank like you’ve never seen it before and it’s brilliant.
