One of last year’s best films is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

The Worst Person in the World

This Oscar-nominated movie with a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score is screening as part of a double bill.

Looking for a movie to watch tonight? Why not check out one of the following films airing on telly this evening?

Casablanca – BBC Four – 9pm

Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman play former lovers who become embroiled in a World War II operation in this romantic thriller drama widely considered as being among the best movies of all time.

Commando – Film4 – 9pm

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this fun ’80s action flick as a retired Special Forces colonel who tries to save his daughter when she is abducted by his former subordinate.

Righteous Kill – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

After Heat and The Godfather Part II, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro reteamed for this disappointing 2008 action flick.

Legend of the Demon Cat – AMC – 9pm

This 2017 fantasy mystery blockbuster from China earned rave reviews (91% on Rotten Tomatoes) and was a big hit at the box office.

Hustlers – RTÉ2 – 9.30pm

Dubbed by JOE’s own entertainment editor Rory Cashin as “Goodfellas with stripping”, if you missed this modern classic when we recommended it recently, you have another chance to check it out tonight.

Die Hard – ITV4 – 10PM

Another classic ’80s action flick, this time starring Bruce Willis as a New York cop who must save his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia) and her colleagues after their Los Angeles work place is taken over by terrorists (led by Alan Rickman) during a Christmas party.

Battle Royale – Sky Sci-Fi – 10pm

A favourite of Quentin Tarantino, this Japanese action thriller is basically The Hunger Games but way grittier and more violent.

St Agatha – Horror Xtra – 10.45pm

Darren Lynn Bousman (the Saw franchise) directs this 2018 religious horror.

The Worst Person in the World – Film4 – 10.50pm

Our pick for tonight is this Norwegian comedy-drama chronicling four years in the life of Julie (an insanely charismatic Renate Reinsve), a woman in her late 20s who struggles to find her career path and navigate her love life. During this period, she becomes romantically involved with Aksel (Anders Danielsen Lie, also excellent), an older comic artist.

Released just last year in Ireland, this Oscar-nominated movie is an emotional, funny, stylish and honest depiction of a person trying to achieve contentedness in life despite not yet knowing what exactly it is they want both professionally and romantically.

Co-written and directed by Joachim Trier, The Worst Person in the World boasts a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and may make a good double bill with the filmmaker’s previous movie – the supernatural thriller drama Thelma – which is airing on Film4 at the later time of 1.25am.

Trespass – Turner Classic Movies – 11.10pm

Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman star in this thriller as a couple whose home is invaded by violent thieves.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li – AMC – 11.15pm

A video game adaptation that was a flop both critically and commercially.
