There are large queues at ATMs all over Ireland as Visa experiences ‘severe disruption’

The Visa payment system has intermittently crashed.

As previously reported, an issue with Visa credit cards has caused havoc for some Irish users as they attempt to pay or withdraw money from ATMs.

The Europe-wide issue has been affecting Irish users across the country when users go to pay for something at the point of sale, only for their card to be declined.

The fault is affecting all merchants nationwide.

Visa released a statement which said: “We are currently experiencing a service disruption which is preventing some Visa transactions in Europe from being processed. We are investigating the cause and working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation. We will keep you updated.”

JOE got in contact with Bank of Ireland, in which a spokesperson assured that Bank of Ireland visa debit cards are working at Bank of Ireland ATMs at time of writing, but not at point of sales i.e. card readers.

Stephen O’Shea, Head of Media Relations for AIB, also confirmed to JOE that while it is not a localised issue, it is affecting Irish customers.

“It is a Visa credit and debit card issue that is affecting us intermittently.”

AIB have said that any AIB cardholders can continue to withdraw cash from AIB ATMs using their AIB Visa Card.

They also state that they’re “aware of intermittent issues with AIB cards today. We are working to resolve the matter and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Due to these technical difficulties, various people around the country have endure lengthy queues to withdraw their money.
