New type of speed cameras to be introduced in Dublin

Carl Kinsella

Dublin is set to be the first Irish city to get ‘time over distance’ speed cameras as part of a new anti-speeding effort.

The new speed cameras will be set up at either end of Dublin’s Port Tunnel, photographing vehicles as they enter and exit the tunnel.

The length of the tunnel will then be divided by the time it took each car to get through the tunnel, thus establish the time over distance – ie the average speed the driver was going between the two cameras.

These are the first speed cameras in Ireland to measure a driver’s speed over such a distance – and if a driver is found to be driving at over 80km/h, they will be hit with a fixed charge and possibly penalty points, according to the Irish Times.

According to Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the journey should take three minutes and 30 seconds if the driver doesn’t break the speed limit.

Work will begin today on installing the cameras.
