“I’m a little bit lost for words” – Toy Show reunion brings Ryan Tubridy to tears

“I just want to say thank you.”

Ryan Tubridy needed a moment to compose himself as he was reunited with some of the best-known, quirkiest, most-loved and über-talented toy show kids.

Friday was the last time Tubridy would be in the host’s chair after 14 years in the job. Patrick Kielty will replace him after the summer.

The 49-year-old passed on a warm message to his successor and was already welling up, at that early stage. What, then, would this special toy show reunion do to him?

After the pre-recorded interview with President Michael D. Higgins aired, Tubridy was joined by the children of the Toy Show’s past and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Tubridy himself choked up as he reunited with Toy Show stars, including Adam King and Saoirse Ruane.

Ryan Tubridy overcome with heart-warming toy show moment

After a joyous musical number, Ryan Tubridy went to hug each of the performers that won our hearts, and got our feet tapping, over the past decade.

Recalling the moments that made them toy show stars, Tubridy kept seeing familiar faces and choked up as he addressed the group:

“You see, when I do the toy show, I often never see any of the kids again. And you always think you’re part of my strange, weird family but you’re trapped in amber – I always think you’re going to stay that age that I associate you with.

“But when I see you looking so grown up and elegant, and talented. I just want to say thank you. You’ve given me so much… ahh… I’m just a little bit lost for words.”

After a warm round of applause, Ryan Tubridy jokingly told himself to ‘stay strong’ before moving on with the show.

There was a further quivering moment when young Saoirse Ruane told Tubridy she had ‘a bump in the road’ in her health journey, then when Adam King got the audience to hold up signs for virtual hugs.

The wee legend, knocking it out of the park again.
