More snow forecast for Ireland as another week of wintry weather beckons

Thought we’d seen the last of the wintry weather in Ireland for a while? Think again.

With temperatures forecast to reach as high as 13 degrees on Sunday, one could be forgiven for thinking that there’ll be a change in the weather as winter nears an end and spring draws closer.

One would be wrong.

According to the latest forecast from Met Éireann, this week will be just as wintry as what we’ve experienced in the month of January, which has been a pretty miserable month, even by Irish standards.

After a mild Sunday, temperatures will drop sharply by Monday night, to as low as -2 in places, leading to a risk of frost and icy patches on untreated surfaces.

Tuesday will start off dry, but rain from the northwest will spread across the country by Tuesday evening.

Showers will become increasingly wintry, leading to the possibility of hail, sleet and snow, particularly in the northwest, as temperatures drop to freezing once again.

Wednesday will be cold and windy, with heavy hail and sleet showers and the possibility of snow in hilly areas.

Afternoon temperatures will exceed no higher than six degrees but wind chill will make it feel even cooler, with scattered wintry showers continuing through Wednesday night to bring a miserable month to a close.

Thursday, which marks the beginning of February, will be a little less windy and showers won’t be as frequent, but there’ll still be plenty of them ahead of a “changeable Atlantic regime” bringing plenty of wind and rain next weekend.

Spring seems a long, long way away yet.
