Parents will receive increase to social welfare payments in April

Kat O'Connor

Parents will receive some additional social welfare payments in April.

The extra payment is being introduced in a bid to tackle the cost of living crisis.

As well as additional Child Benefit payments, parents will also receive an extra €100 for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance.

They will also be given a €200 lump sum payment. This payment is only for people who have been on social welfare for longer than a year.

Those on the Working Family Payment will also be given €200 if they do not qualify for the extra payment based on another social welfare payment.

The date for the once-off payments has not yet been confirmed but is expected in April.

Additional Child Benefit payments are expected in June.

The additional payments are set to help parents with the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Parents have praised the measures, but believe more needs to be done to help.

Calls to extend fuel allowance.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the number of families struggling to heat their homes has doubled.

According to a study by Friends of the Earth, Irish families are bucking under the pressure of rising fuel costs.

They’re also struggling to heat their homes due to poor housing conditions.

The public has called on the government to do more, but they have no plans on extending the fuel allowance.

Those on the Fuel Allowance get €33 per week. It is either paid every week or every fortnight.

The allowance was introduced to help with the cost of heating your home during the winter.

Only one person in each household is given the Fuel Allowance.

The Fuel Allowance is paid in late September and payments stop in April.

People tend to receive the allowance for around 28 weeks.
