Video: Man uses giant crane to stage elaborate marriage proposal; ends up destroying a neighbour’s house

She still said yes, but it might be a while before the groom is able to afford a good wedding.

In an age when one-upmanship is alive and well, a simple run of the mill marriage proposal appears to have become a thing of the past.

An exotic location or an elaborate stunt to persuade one’s significant other to say yes seems to be a requirement these days but, as was proved in the Netherlands at the weekend, it can sometimes backfire in spectacular fashion.

A man from the town of IJsselstein went all out with his proposal, hiring out a giant crane with the intention of being lowered in front of his girlfriend’s bedroom window, singing her a song and asking for her hand in marriage.

Unfortunately for the Romeo in question, however, the crane was not secured and it crashed into and through the roof of a neighbour’s house, causing plenty of damage with the initial impact and again when those operating the crane tried to lift it back out again.

Several properties nearby had to be evacuated, while the man himself managed to escape shortly before the crane crashed.

According to reports, the lady who never got the witness the admittedly romantic proposal still said yes and the happy couple decided to celebrate their engagement in Paris, where, presumably, they’ll be drawing up plans to relocate from a neighbourhood where they can’t be flavour of the month right now.
