Women's Aid say the number of women killed violently in Ireland in 2026 so far is the same as last year.

A 72 year-old man has been charged with the murder of his wife in Portlaoise on Sunday.

Gardai believe Adina Raluca Constantin died after a violent assault.

Ms Constantin, who was in her 50s, died after Gardai were called to an apartment in the town around 12:30 in the afternoon.

Eugen Constantin, of Lakeshore House, Church Street in Portlaoise, was brought before Portlaoise District Court on Tuesday morning.

Mr Constantin was remanded in custody to Cloverhill Prison and is due to appear in court again on 13 July via video link.

Ms Constantin was originally from Romania and had been living in Ireland for the last 15 years, working in a medical clinic in Portlaoise.

Constantin is the seventh woman to be killed in the Republic of Ireland this year. 

Women's Aid say the number of women killed violently in Ireland in 2026 so far is same as total for last year.

According to the Women’s Aid Femicide Watch for the Republic of Ireland, seven women have died in violent circumstances so far this year.

Speaking on Tuesday, Sarah Benson, CEO of Women’s Aid said:

"We are thinking today of Adina Costantin, and her loved ones, colleagues and community. Prevention of all domestic, sexual and gender-based violence is crucial and urgent.
