Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is recovering in hospital after undergoing a "small procedure", the club has confirmed. The 74-year-old former Republic of Ireland boss is expected to be released ahead of Celtic's trip to Kilmarnock on Sunday, the42 reports.
No details were given about the operation, which came days after the Derry native oversaw Celtic's opening-day win over Dundee in the Scottish Premiership. O'Neill signed a one-year deal in June to become the club's permanent manager for a second time, having led them to the league title and the Scottish Cup last season. "In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O'Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital. We would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two and, on behalf of Martin, we would like to thank supporters for their kind wishes. We would ask that the privacy of Martin and his family is respected."
Before returning to Celtic, O'Neill had not managed since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2019, and he sealed last season's title with a dramatic final-day win over Hearts. Celtic, who confirmed the news in a statement on their official website, travel to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock on Sunday.
