Saturdays!
When we dance in the dark in the room.
Where it all gets real.
I know you know how it feels.
Lyrics from this year’s ‘Saturdays’ by Twin Shadow and HAIM, there. Bit of a jam.
Y’know what else is good? Movies. Here are your TV selections for Saturday 17 November…
A Beautiful Mind – Film 4 – 6.15pm
Russell Crowe in a performance that nearly landed him an Oscar.
The Wolverine – E4 – 9pm
Hugh Jackman goes to Japan in search of peace. Doesn’t get it.
The Drop – Film 4 – 9pm
Tom Hardy leads a slow-burning crime drama.
The Rock – Universal TV – 9.10pm
One of the top five action movies of the 1990s.
@ me on Twitter if you want to know the other four.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – RTÉ 2 – 9.45pm
Part two of the Andy Serkis-fronted Planet of the Apes saga and definitely the best of the three.
Serkis is again superb as Caesar, but Toby Kebbell’s damaged rival Koba is a terrifying and wounded turn to savour.
Goodfellas – ITV4 – 10.10pm
De Niro, Pesci, Liotta. Iconic.
Starship Troopers – SyFy – 10.50pm
Excellent ultra-violent satire about war from the addled brain of Paul Verhoven.
Wildly misunderstood at the time, Starship Troopers is arguably more relevant today than it was at the time.
Shaun of the Dead – ITV – 11.05pm
The rom-zom-com to beat all rom-zom-coms.
Candyman – Film 4 – 1am
A tremendous horror that gave Tony Todd a signature role for the ages.
Candyman is still genuinely haunting today, and we’d approve a remake only for the fact that they’d definitely get it wrong. Watch this instead.
