PIC: Just another example of everyday sexism from some Cork students

Tony Cuddihy

Warning to all women: If you’re looking for accommodation in Ireland, don’t be too good looking.

A JOE reader, who wishes not to be named, has told us about a text message she received in the small hours of Thursday morning informing her why she was not being considered for a house share in Cork.

The 24-year-old female student was delighted when she went to view a house in a perfect location for the upcoming academic year.

She got on well with the two men she would be sharing with – they will all be part of the same faculty in UCC next year, in fact – but things took a turn when she got a completely unacceptable text at 1.42am this morning.

“After some texts over back asking questions about parking arrangements and how many academic years I was going to be around for, I had great confidence that I would be offered the room,” she told JOE.

“This morning I woke up to the following message which I thought was a bad joke at first.”

“It’s so disgusting and frustrating to be subjected to this kind of sexism and objectification while I look for a bed for the year,” she added.

“House hunting in Cork right now is difficult enough without this kind of vile behaviour.”
