He won an Oscar for his brief appearance in Little Miss Sunshine.
Academy Award and Tony Award-winning actor Alan Arkin has died, aged 89.
The American actor’s death was confirmed by his sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony.
“Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man,” they said in a statement. “A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”
Arkin is best known by modern audiences for his role in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), where he plays Edwin Hoover, the central family’s foul-mouthed grandfather who gets kicked out of his retirement home.
For his role as Edwin, which saw him on screen for just 14 minutes, Arkin won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
He was also nominated for Oscars for his roles in Ben Affleck’s political drama Argo (2013), The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (1966) and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968).
Films which Arkin is also known for include Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Glengarry Glen Ross (1992).
Arkin most recently co-starred alongside Michael Douglas in Netflix’s The Kominsky Method, earning Emmy nominations in 2019 and 2020, and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations in 2020 and 2021. He also starred in animated TV show BoJack Horseman as the voice of J.D. Salinger.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 26, 1934, his family moved to Los Angeles during his childhood. He began his career on Broadway, acting in Enter Laughing in 1963 for which he received the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play.
