The first full-length trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water has been unleashed, as the film finally gets set to no-doubt dominate cinemas when it arrives later this year.
For a long time, the very idea that James Cameron was actually going to make another Avatar film – let alone an entire series of them, despite his continued promises – registered as something of a running joke.
Yes, the 2009 original was a historically gigantic success – at the time of writing, it has made almost $3 billion worldwide – but, well, it's been 13 years. Cameron once said he was 'no longer in the movie business' and was 'now in the Avatar business' yet he has taken so long to get this thing back in gear.
It's happening, though. You will be returning to Pandora soon. Set to hit cinemas on 16 December and boasting a rumoured running time of three hours and 10 minutes, Avatar 2 is clearly going to be the biggest movie event of the year. So, apart from blue-tinted visuals, what's it all about?
Per the film's official synopsis:
"Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure."
Cast-wise, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi and Stephen Lang are back on board, while Kate Winslet has also joined the party.
