One of the most-read Irish novels of recent years is getting a TV adaptation

The popular Cork-based series has been cast and will hit TV screens next year.

You may have heard that Boys of Tommen, the popular book series by Irish author Chloe Walsh, is being adapted for TV by Prime Video.

The romantic drama saga, which first began with the 2018 smash-hit novel Binding 13, will be brought to the screen by the producers of The Summer I Turned Pretty, One Day, and Twilight.

For our non-readers, here's everything you need to know before the series comes out.

What is Boys of Tommen about? 

The first season of the TV adaptation will follow the stories of Binding 13 and Keeping 13, the first two novels in the Boys of Tommen series.

The show will follow the forbidden love story of two Irish teenagers studying at Tommen College, a prestigious private school in Ballylaggin, County Cork.

Johnny Kavanagh is the school's star rugby player with a chance to go professional. Shannon Lynch is the shy new girl who has recently transferred to Tommen College.

The two seemingly have nothing in common. While Shannon struggles with an abusive home life, Johnny has been hiding a career-ending injury. However, through their shared secrets and undeniable chemistry, the two battle against all odds to save each other. 

It is anticipated that further seasons will follow the rest of the Boys of Tommen novels, focusing on Johnny and Shannon’s friends and family.

Who are the main characters?

The official casting for the series was revealed by Prime Video last week. Nancy Surridge will play Shannon Lynch, and Conor Sánchez will act as Johnny Kavanagh.

James O'Donoghue will play Joey Lynch, and Sophie McGibbon will star across him as Aoife Molloy.

The remainder of the cast has not been announced.

Brendan Canty, who won the Best Director award at the IFTAs this year for his Cork-set drama film Christy, will helm the series.

Poppy Colgan (co-creator of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder) will serve as lead writer on the adaptation.

When is the series coming out?

Filming for season one will officially start in late 2026.

No release date has been confirmed by Prime Video, but fans are anticipating a 2027 release.
