Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s DAD is getting his own biopic

Carl Kinsella

Rocky Johnson

We can think of just the perfect guy to play him, actually.

Rocky Johnson, father of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, is the subject of an upcoming biopic that will explore the life of a man who became a WWE Hall of Famer after a wrestling career that began in the midst of the 1960s civil rights movement.

Johnson, whose original name was Wade Bowles, married into a Samoan wrestling family when he wed Ata Maivia, the woman with whom he had his son Dwayne, who you might be vaguely aware of as the best paid actor in Hollywood and most recognisable wrestler of all time.

Rocky is also known for becoming the first black tag team wrestling champion with Tony Atlas, and sparring with Muhammad Ali.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is being developed by filmmaker brothers Jonathan and Justin Gajewski and will be titled Ring King. The pair have previously directed Suicide Squad and Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

There is no word yet on a release date, or on who is slated to play Johnson, although they could certainly do worse than Dwayne Johnson himself (if they’ve got the budget for him).

It wouldn’t be the first time that Johnson has played his father on-screen, having already done so on a Season 1 episode of That 70’s Show.
