Upon arriving in the city, the trio meet the arms dealer Vernon (Sharlto Copley, District 9) and his associates (including Babou Ceesay, Jack Reynor and Noah Taylor) at a large warehouse. There, both parties are joined by the intermediary Justine (Oscar-winner Brie Larson, Room).
Tensions quickly flare over several issues, eventually spilling over into an extended firefight between the IRA men and the gun dealers, with Justine caught in the middle.
From cult director Ben Wheatley (Kill List), Free Fire is ingenious in its one-location set-up. It shows that you don't need a massive budget or to film in lots of exotic places to make an exciting, visceral action flick, so long as you have a great cast and a smart script.
Also, Free Fire's screenplay, for all its dark humour and shootouts, actually has a strong anti-gun message. The story argues that if you put a group of men in a confined location with a cache full of guns, it won't be long before someone starts firing.
Free Fire is airing on TV tonight on Film4 at 11.50pm. It will also be available to stream on Channel 4's website from Saturday, 16 May.
