A genre-bending mystery thriller series and 5 more big trailers you might have missed this week

Stephen Porzio

Two hit shows are returning soon for their second seasons.

Welcome back to JOE’s weekly trailer column.

By now, you should know the drill: every seven days we round up the best teasers released in the world of film and TV.

Let’s get into this week’s batch.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Starting with films, this week a new teaser dropped for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the next movie in the MCU.

Featuring the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr Stephen Strange and directed by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead and original Spider-Man trilogies), it will arrive in Irish cinemas on 5 May.

While a number of trailers have been released for the sequel already, this is the one that bears the fingerprints of Raimi the most, with its unsettling imagery and eerie use of ‘All I Have to Do is Dream” adding an undertone of horror to proceedings.

An Cailín Ciúin

After picking up an award at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) is being released in Irish cinemas on 12 May.

Based on a novella by Claire Keegan, the Irish language drama is set in 1981 and tells the story of Cáit (Catherine Clinch), a nine-year-old girl who is sent away to live with foster parents for the summer she has never met.

“Slowly, in the care of this couple, Cáit blossoms and discovers a new way of living, but in this house where affection grows and there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one,” its plot synopsis reads.

Marcel The Shell With Shoes On

Based on the popular short films of the same name, this live-action/animated comedy tells the story of a one-inch-tall shell named Marcel (voiced by co-writer Jenny Slate) who searches for his family with the help of a documentary filmmaker.

Currently boasting a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes after premiering at the Telluride Film Festival last year, it is out in the US on 24 June so you can expect an Irish release after that.

Outer Range

Moving onto TV, this Amazon Prime Video show stars Josh Brolin as a Wyoming rancher who becomes involved in a supernatural mystery following the arrival of a drifter (Imogen Poots).

Co-starring great character actors Lili Taylor, Tom Pelphrey and Will Patton, the enigmatic teasers for Outer Range have viewers summing up the show as “Yellowstone with aliens”.

We’re definitely intrigued anyway. It premieres on the streamer on 15 April.

The Flight Attendant S2/Russian Doll S2

Two much-loved comedy dramas are returning to screens for their second seasons in the coming weeks.

First to come back is Russian Doll on 20 April, the incredible series from Netflix co-created by and starring Natasha Lyonne as a woman named Nadia in New York who becomes trapped in a time loop.

Based on the trippy trailer for the new season, it seems like time has found a new way to mess with Nadia.

Then on 26 May, the second season of The Flight Attendant lands on Sky Max and streaming service NOW.

Kaley Cuoco returns again as the title character who finds herself entangled in another international intrigue.
