Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 1 May) is Herself, the acclaimed 2020 drama co-written by and starring Clare Dunne (Kin).
In the film, she plays a single mother named Sandra who escapes her abusive partner with her two young children, only to find herself trapped in temporary accommodation.
After months of struggling, she draws inspiration from one of her daughter’s bedtime stories and hits upon the idea of self-building an affordable home.
"She finds an architect who provides her with plans and is offered land by Peggy (Harriet Walter), a woman she cleans for. Aido (Conleth Hill), a building contractor, appears willing to help, too," the plot synopsis adds.
"But as her past rears its head... and as bureaucrats fight back against her independent spirit, will Sandra be able to rebuild her life from the ground up?"
Praised for its lead turn by Dunne, its important subject matter, and its blend of grittiness and heart, Herself holds a very high 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie is airing on TV tonight on RTÉ2 at 9.35pm.
It's also available to rent from Apple TV, Google Play and the Sky Store.
