Isolation, the excellent 2005 Irish horror thriller, is airing on TV tonight (Wednesday, 29 October).
The movie follows Dan (John Lynch - The Fall, Some Mother's Son), a cash-strapped farmer in rural Ireland, who accepts money from his veterinarian ex-girlfriend Orla (Essie Davis - Alien: Earth, The Babadook) and her boss at a genetics firm, John (Marcel Iureș - Layer Cake, Youth Without Youth).
This is so that John and Orla can run experiments on Dan's land, with their goal to develop faster-growing cattle.
The plan backfires, however, when a mutated, infectious, and rapidly growing creature originating from one of Dan’s cows gets loose on the farm.
A young couple on the run, Jamie (Sean Harris, the Mission: Impossible franchise) and Mary (future Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga - Loving, Presumed Innocent), hiding out nearby, become embroiled in the ensuing chaos that could threaten humanity.
From writer-director Billy O'Brien (I Am Not a Serial Killer) and future Oscar-nominated cinematographer Robbie Ryan (The Favourite, Marriage Story), Isolation is one of the first properly successful Irish horror movies.
The film's viscerally gruesome carnage, its great cast and its tale of a mysterious monster picking off a cast of characters one by one in a claustrophobic setting recalls classics like Alien and The Thing.
That said, the movie is also uniquely Irish in terms of its setting and its themes.
In regard to the latter, it's worth noting that Isolation came out four years after the 2001 foot-and-mouth disease outbreak that impacted Ireland and the UK.
Recently, JOE was shocked to discover that the 2005 horror thriller was unavailable to rent or stream in Ireland.
Thankfully, though, Isolation will be airing on TV tonight/tomorrow morning on Film4 at 1.10am.
The movie will also be available to stream on Channel 4's website from Thursday, 30 October.
