When can we expect Michael 2 to start filming?

Michael 2 is officially happening. Lionsgate has confirmed its production plans and teased a release window for the sequel to Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic that became one of the studio's biggest hits after landing in cinemas earlier this year.

For the Irish film fans who turned out for the first film, a follow-up is now firmly on the way.

Variety reports that Michael 2 is eyeing a filming start "towards the end of this year" or in early 2027, with Lionsgate teasing a release date to follow.

The original Michael was a major commercial success, Variety notes it helped boost the studio's second-quarter results, narrowing its loss to $29 million.

Screen Rant, which first carried the filming update, says Lionsgate has now "officially confirmed" both when it plans to begin production and when the sequel might reach theatres.

No cast changes have been announced, and the studio is keeping the exact release date under wraps for now.

What is clear is that the biopic's box-office performance has given Lionsgate the confidence to green-light a second chapter, a sequel that will sit among the best movies of 2026 still to land.

An Irish cinema date has yet to be confirmed, but if the first film's turnout is any guide, Michael 2 will be a fixture when it finally arrives.
