It also features one of Ireland’s biggest new acting talents.

Hereditary was released less than a year ago, but the movie’s writer and director Ari Aster is already gearing up to release his next movie.

In case we didn’t already make it abundantly clear – like when we named it our favourite movie of 2018 – we were HUGE fans of Hereditary, so to say that we’re excited about whatever Aster does next is a bit of an understatement, which is why we’ve got our eyes glued to everything to do with Midsommar.

On Tuesday evening, A24 tweeted out the following mini-animation, which simply features four young ladies having a little flagpole dance, which seems innocuous enough. But if you’ve seen Hereditary, then you already know that innocuous doesn’t exist in Aster’s wheelhouse:

Creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppy.

In terms of plot, and who else is involved, here is what we know so far.

Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) and Jack Reynor (Sing Street) will play a couple that travels to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for it’s fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.

So… Wicker Man vibes, for sure.

The movie also stars Will Poulter (Detroit) and William Jackson Harper (Chidi from The Good Place!), while Aster described the movie as an “apocalyptic break-up movie”, and also told The Hollywood Reporter that “It’s Scandinavian folk horror. That is the only other horror movie I have. And I’m pretty sure that’s going to be it for a long time.”

Get it while you can!

Midsommar is set for release in US cinemas on Friday 9 August, with an Irish release surely to arrive soon afterwards.
