The movie saw Washington re-teaming with one of his most frequent collaborators.

Staying in this Saturday night? Not to worry as there are loads of movies airing on telly this evening, starting with:

Life – Film4 – 9pm

A tense Alien-style thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds.

Angel Heart – AMC UK – 9pm

Mickey Rourke plays a private investigator hired by an enigmatic figure (Robert De Niro) to solve a disappearance in this very atmospheric and twisty neo-noir horror.

Zoolander 2 – Comedy Central – 9pm

This long-awaited comedy sequel did not get the love of its predecessor.

Last Knights – Legend – 9pm

Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman star in this critically-panned action drama based on the Japanese legend of the forty-seven rōnin.

Cabin Fever (2016) – Horror Xtra – 9pm

The very poorly received remake of director Eli Roth’s cult horror about a flesh-eating virus.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – Channel 4 – 9.15pm

The solid fifth entry in the Tom Cruise franchise, which introduced the aforementioned Rebecca Ferguson to the series as disavowed MI6 agent Ilsa Faust.

The Rewrite – TG4 – 9.30pm

This rom-com stars Hugh Grant as a washed-up screenwriter who takes up teaching at a university.

Herself – RTÉ One – 9.45pm

This Irish drama has a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and focuses around a single mother (Kin’s Clare Dunne) who decides to build a house for her family.

JOE spoke to Dunne in the run-up to the movie’s release back in 2020.

Harold and Kumar Get the Munchies – MTV – 10pm

Starring John Cho and Kal Penn as two stoners who, you guessed it, get the munchies – this is the first entry in the comedy franchise.

21 Jump Street – RTÉ2 – 10.15pm

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill lead the cast of this very funny movie reboot of the TV show of the same name.

The Taking of Pelham 123 – ITV4 – 10.35pm

Our pick for tonight is this 2009 action thriller about a train dispatcher (Denzel Washington), who is pressed into the role of negotiator after a criminal (John Travolta) hijacks a subway car of passengers in New York.

A remake of a classic ’70s movie, this modern take on the story benefits from a typically commanding performance from Washington (take our new quiz on the actor here), a live-wire turn from John Travolta, a supporting cast filled with recognisable faces like James Gandolfini, John Turturro and Luis Guzmán, as well as pacy and stylish direction from Tony Scott (Crimson Tide, Man on Fire) – one of Washington’s most frequent collaborators.

As well as airing on TV tonight, the film is available to stream for free on Lionsgate+ and Sky Cinema.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 – Sky Showcase – 11pm

The final entry in the YA vampire franchise.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II – Horror Xtra – 11pm

Not as good as the original Hellraiser but still interesting in parts.

Step Brothers – Film4 – 11.05pm

“It’s the Catalina Wine Mixer.”

Jacob’s Ladder – AMC UK – 11.10pm

This ’90s horror classic stars Tim Robbins as a haunted Vietnam War veteran.

Cabin Fever (2002) – Sky Sci-Fi – 11.20pm

The original well-liked Cabin Fever from director Eli Roth.

Thirteen Days – RTÉ One – 11.35pm

Kevin Costner leads the cast of this historical political thriller about the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Alien: Covenant – Channel 4 – 11.45pm

Michael Fassbender is phenomenal playing two different characters in the last Alien film released to date.
