Alias Grace

Your new Netflix obsession.

If you were paying attention, you might have heard plenty of noise about Alias Grace, a mini-series based on a novel by Margaret Atwood, the author responsible for The Handmaid’s Tale.

The small screen adaptation of that particular work proved incredibly popular and it looks like Alias Grace is going to follow in its footsteps when it goes on release on Netflix tomorrow, November 3.

Alias Grace is based on the true story of Grace Marks, a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Canada who, along with stable hand James McDermott, was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer and his housekeeper in 1843.

McDermott was hanged, while Marks was sentenced to life imprisonment, becoming a notorious figure for her role in the murder before being exonerated 30 years later.

Starring Sarah Gadot as Grace Marks and Kerr Logan as James McDermott, the early reviews for the six-hour miniseries are in and they are glowing, with The A.V. Club describing it as “scarier than The Handmaid’s Tale” and Collider calling it “captivating”.

Despite only having a handful of reviews, meanwhile, it already has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the Tampa Bay Times hailed it as “a spellbinding tale of true crime and quiltmaking”.

Looks like it’s going to live up to the hype then, but you can see for yourself what the fuss is all about from tomorrow.

Alias Grace goes on release on Netflix on Friday, November 3.
