Rachel Weisz is against a female James Bond: “Women are really interesting and should get their own stories”

Paul Moore

The Oscar-winning actress is married to the current 007, Daniel Craig.

A few weeks ago, Idris Elba caused quite a stir when he suggested that a woman could play the character of James Bond.  While promoting his directorial debut, Yardie, the star of Luther and The Wire was asked if he’d like to play the character and said: “Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male? Could be a woman, could be a black woman, could be a white woman, but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have — do something different with it, why not?”

Following on from this, Rachel Weisz was talking with The Telegraph about her new film, The Mercy, and she was asked about the prospect of a female James Bond. You may know that the Oscar-winner is married to the current 007, Daniel Craig.

She said: “[Bond author Ian Fleming] devoted an awful lot of time to writing this particular character, who is particularly male and relates in a particular way to women. Why not create your own story rather than jumping on to the shoulders and being compared to all those other male predecessors? Women are really fascinating and interesting and should get their own stories.”

As for the next Bond film, the 25th in the series, it’s set to be released in November 2019 and Daniel Craig will be returning. As for the director, that hasn’t been announced yet but Christopher Nolan has previously said that he’s definitely interested in directing a Bond film.

When Craig decides not to renew his license to kill, Tom Hardy’s name has also been mentioned for the role. the star of Dunkirk and The Dark Knight Rises has previously said that he’d be happy to play Bond in a film that’s directed by Nolan.
