‘This has redefined mystery movies’ – The trailer for this thriller reflects every parent’s worst nightmare

Rory Cashin

It is very rare to see a scary movie get 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, but this one of them.

When a father (John Cho)’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter’s laptop.

That is the starting point for the new mystery thriller Searching, but as the effective, and (thankfully) only one-minute long trailer below shows, there is a lot more going on beneath the surface than just a man looking for his daughter.

The film was shown at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and picked up two awards there, including the Audience Award, which usually goes to the most entertaining movies shown at the festival.

On top of that, with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics who got to see it at the festival have nothing but good things to say about it:

“Cutting to the emotional core of what social media says about us, the result is as much a time capsule of our relationship to (and reliance upon) modern technology as it is a cutting-edge digital thriller.” – Variety

“Search is shockingly effective, not just in creating a sense of constant, palpable tension, but also in the way it pulls off authentic, effective emotional beats.” – The Verge

“Despite the specificity of its story and the manner in which its told, the issues at hand remain universal, including David’s struggle to connect with his child and the way paranoia can make even the best friends into the worst enemies.” – IndieWire

“Impressively, first-time filmmaker and former Google commercials creator Aneesh Chaganty has also made a real movie, the story of a family that morphs into a crime drama that gradually ratchets up the tension as all good thrillers must, one that’s well constructed and acted as well as novel in its storytelling techniques.” – The Hollywood Reporter

We’ll know for ourselves just how good it is when Seaching is released in cinemas in Ireland and the UK on Friday 31 August.
