WATCH: The Sugar Hill Gang and John Spillane perform a rap remix of ‘Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile’

Conor Heneghan

There’s a sentence we thought we’d never write.

It’s pretty fair to say that John Spillane and The Sugar Hill Gang come from opposite ends of the musical spectrum, but they say that opposites attract and that proved to be the case in the most surreal way on Friday night.

Securing the group behind the seminal anthem ‘Rapper’s Delight’ for an appearance on the show was quite the coup for the Late Late Show and as well as giving the audience what they wanted when playing that tune, they also delivered something completely unexpected.

In one of the most unlikely musical collaborations of our time, the rappers were joined on stage by John Spillane for a rap remix of the well-known Irish traditional song, ‘Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile,’.

It probably shouldn’t have worked, but it absolutely did and went down a storm with the musicians themselves as well as everyone in the audience.

Amazing. As was this…
