Get fit, look fit: All about the base layer

Because 'it's too cold', is never an excuse not to exercise

Conor Heneghan

Because ‘it’s too cold’, is never an excuse not to exercise.

Years ago, you’d nearly tear the lagging jacket off the boiler and wrap it around you before going for a run in sub-zero temperatures, but thankfully there are more comfortable and economical methods of exercising in the cold these days.

Base layer clothing is not just for staving off the cold, of course; it helps aid flexibility and support for muscles and despite adding an extra layer, it can help cool you down when necessary too.

We’ve looked at some of the various options available for what is an essential piece of kit at this time of year.

Under Armour Men’s ColdGear® Evo Long Sleeve Compression Mock (€52)

Although they’re absolutely huge in Ireland now, Under Armour were arguably first known on these shores for their base layer products.

So much so, in fact, that any sort of base layer clothing is still often wrongly referred to as Under Armour, particularly in GAA circles.

Having specialised in it for years and years, Under Armour know a toasty base layer and at this time of year, you can’t go wrong with their ColdGear® long-sleeved top, which will keep you warm without feeling bulky at the same time.

Adidas Response short tights (€33)

Some people wrongly assume that compression shorts are a little tight and restrictive for, you know, that area down there.

In fact, they allow great freedom of movement and provide that extra bit of reassurance for those who have experienced muscle problems in the hip, groin and hamstring areas.

Just remember to wear another pair of shorts over them; you don’t want to go putting too much on display.

Canterbury Base layer Cold Uglies Long Sleeve (€47)

Looking good is not the main priority when buying base layer products, especially considering that you’ll more often than not be wearing something over them. We can’t help but be impressed by this kit all the same.

It’ll do everything your average cold weather base layer top will do but it’s so striking that it would almost be worth a little shivering so you could wear it on its own and show it off in public.

Want.

Skins A200 Men’s Thermal Compression Long Tights (€100)

baselayer5

If you’re looking for really specialist stuff when it comes to base layer and compression products, then you’ll want to check out what Skins have to offer.

By all means, wear these compression long tights while you’re out for a run or working out, but keep them on for a while afterwards as well, because the compression technology will help deliver oxygen to your muscles and speed up the recovery process.

Columbia Men’s Baselayer Heavyweight Half Zip Top (€74.95)

Torn between whether to wear a t-shirt or a jacket out running? Compromise and wear what is almost a cross between the two, a Columbia half-zip top that includes all-important thumb holes that the part and keep your hands warm too.
