How the Covid-19 emergency will change the way we shop for groceries

As we adjust to our new routines amid the Covid-19 emergency and nationwide self-isolation, the simple act of shopping for groceries is at the forefront of everyone’s mind.

Devan Hughes, co-founder of Buymie, has been at the epicentre of finding solutions to help us adapt to this new normal. His mobile app allows users to order groceries from a variety of Irish supermarkets online and have them delivered to their door in as little as one hour.

Speaking on JOE’s business show, All In, which is backed by AIB, Devan spoke about the unique position his company has found itself during the Covid-19 emergency.

“We’ve been growing really fast for the last four years that we’ve been in the market, but there’s no doubt that the last quarter has been unprecedented.

“I think not just from a society point of view but from a commercial point of view, I think the entire landscape of the business climate has been upended,” he said.

“Grocery is kind of front and centre at the moment. I think the world that we live in today, a lot of people take for granted the abundance of goods and services.”

“There’s certain industries that underpin our society and what it takes to have a functioning society and that’s energy supply and food supply.

“What people are really recognising now is that in this period of significant uncertainty, where no one alive has ever experienced this, I think food supply has become front and centre of everyone’s mind.

“We’ve found ourselves in a very unique position and we’ve a strong team doing their absolute best to try and provide as much service and much capacity to the market right now.

“Not only is this our business, it just so happens to be the right thing to do at this point and it’s quite an important service that we’ve found ourselves providing.

“It kind of feels like the work that we did last year in terms of scaling and getting our systems in place has taken on a slightly higher meaning.”
