Here are the 6 best movies on the telly tonight

Rory Cashin

When you’ve already watched everything on Netflix…

To be fair, there are some great matches on today – Brazil V Costa Rica at 1pm, Nigeria V Iceland at 4pm, and Serbia V Switzerland at 7pm – and, also to be fair, Love Island is actually very addictive this year… that Sam guy needs a stern talking to.

However, if neither of those are your bag, there’s also some great stuff out in the cinema right now. We review Ocean’s 8, Hereditary and loads more in our latest episode of The Big Reviewski, which you can listen to right here:

If you’re staying in tonight though, then there’s also a handful of movies that are fighting for your time.

FRIDAY 22 JUNE

The Jackal – SyFy – 9.00pm

Richard Gere puts on the worst Irish accent this side of Brad Pitt, playing an imprisoned IRA member who is released on the proviso that he helps the authorities find another, even more dangerous assassin, played by Bruce Willis. A vague remake of much better thriller The Day Of The Jackal, but this one has loads more explosions, so…

Bad Teacher – E4 – 9.00pm

Cameron Diaz is a bad teacher (hey! that’s the name of the movie!) who begins to pretend to like her job in order to get the attention of new substitute teacher in school, played by Justin Timberlake at his most unlikable. Diaz has much better chemistry with Jason Segel, who plays a not-hugely-present gym teacher.

The Other Guys – Comedy Central – 9.00pm

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are NYPD partners who kind of hate each other, but are forced to work together when a massive case falls into their lap. Worth it for the Sam Jackson / The Rock opening scene alone.

Lockout – Film 4 – 11.15pm

Guy Pearce is a hardened criminal who is released from an Earth prison in order to break into a space prison and save the President’s daughter from rioting prisoners who taken over the, yep, we’re going to say it again… space prison.

The Producers – RTE One – 11.35pm

Nathan Lane, Uma Thurman, Will Ferrell and Matthew Broderick star in this movie about some Broadway producers who attempt to make a massive flop on purpose in order to make a quick buck. However, making something bad on purpose turns out to be a lot harder than they thought.

Sexy Beast – Channel Four – 12.10am

Ray Winstone is a retired safecracker who is very aggressively persuaded to take on one last job by an absolutely terrifying Ben Kingsley (yes, really, he is proper scary in this), but that One Last Job doesn’t go the way they hoped it would

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
