But this isn’t Netflix’s fault. There’s just too much choice.

The Blind Side (IMDB rating: 7.7/10)

Netflix synopsis: The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.

JOE verdict: A classic. Sandra Bullock goes all out in this touching drama, and she even won an Oscar for her troubles. Well worth a watch.

Inception (IMDB rating: 8.8/10)

Netflix synopsis: A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a CEO.

JOE verdict: One of the best movies of the past ten years, and really not as confusing as everyone says it is. Do pay attention though…

Velvet Buzzsaw (IMDB rating: 5.9/10)

Netflix synopsis: After a series of paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.

JOE verdict: A little bit hard to follow, a little bit cringey, but somehow entertaining the whole way through. Jake Gyllenhaal is excellent in it too.

Abducted in Plain Sight (IMDB rating: 6.8/10)

Netflix synopsis: In this true crime documentary, a family fall prey to the manipulative charms of a neighbour, who abducts their adolescent daughter. Twice.

JOE verdict: A seriously difficult watch, but an insightful one nonetheless. Not for the faint-hearted.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (IMDB rating: 7.4/10)

Netflix synopsis: Ranging from absurd to profound, these Western vignettes from the Coen brothers follow the adventures of outlaws and settlers on the American frontier.

JOE verdict: Starring Tim Blake Nelson, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, James Franco, this was never going to be anything but brilliant. Get on it.

Fifty Shades Darker (IMDB rating: 4.6/10)

Netflix synopsis: Anastasia embarks on a publishing career, as Christian renegotiates the terms of their relationship. But outside forces threaten to rip them apart.

JOE verdict: Okay, we know. This is not a good movie. But there is definitely some value in watching it. Whether it’s just to take the piss out of it, or to genuinely try get into it, you’ll have a good laugh…

Passengers (IMDB rating: 7.0/10)

Netflix synopsis: After waking from his hibernation decades ahead of schedule, a lonely passenger on an interplanetary journey decides to rouse a fellow traveller.

JOE verdict: A good movie that could have been a great movie; Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence do well in a film that will have you interested throughout.

Coach Carter (IMDB rating: 7.3/10)

Netflix synopsis: Controversial basketball coach Ken Carter puts school before sports and benches his undefeated high school team for poor academic performance.

JOE verdict: This is one that will definitely get you pumped, and is arguably one of the best sports movies of all time. If you’re in the mood for feeling inspired, this is the one for you.

And prepare to learn about respect while you’re at it.

Rogue One (IMDB rating: 7.8/10)

Netflix synopsis: A former thief leads an eccentric band, including a blind monk and an enemy robot, on a mission to steal plans for a powerful imperial space station.

JOE verdict: Arguably the best movie to come from the Star Wars universe in a really long time, it is essential watching for any fan of the movies. The final scene with Darth Vader will go down in history when it comes to badass character moments.

Hitch (IMDB rating: 6.6/10)

Netflix synopsis: While helping his latest client woo the fine lady of his dreams, a professional “date doctor” finds that his game doesn’t quite work on the gossip columnist with whom he’s smitten.

JOE verdict: A good laugh. Will Smith is funny as ever, and although he starts off the movie as a somewhat problematic character, he develops as a man by the end. And isn’t that what matters? Plus it gave birth to this banger:
