Ardal O’Hanlon has joined the cast for Season 2 of Derry Girls

Derry Girls Ardal O'Hanlon

Father Dougal in Derry Girls? Talk about a dream come true.

Earlier in the week we got our first look at Season 2 of Derry Girls through its first official trailer, and it looks just as brilliant as the first season did.

There was hilarious one-liners, the return of some legendary characters, and an excellent soundtrack to go with it.

So based on that 90-second clip alone, we were already expecting big things.

And with this most recent news, we can only imagine that the second season of the hit show is going to be even better than the first.

That is because Father Dougal himself, Ardal O’Hanlon, will be joining the cast as a guest star.

“Ardal O’Hanlon joins our family this year, which is brilliant,” said Saoirse-Monica Jackson, who plays Erin Quinn, while speaking to RadioTimes.

We don’t know much about the character O’Hanlon will play, but we do know that he is not a priest…

Jackson sung the praises of the Father Ted star, making us even more excited to see him join the family:

“I think it’s something that everybody will recognise, and he completely gets it so on the money,” she said.

“It was really surreal, just looking at him, because he’s such an iconic figure in Ireland, and he’s such a lovely man. He’s so good in it.”

“There’s a scene where it gets quite physical, and (writer and creator) Lisa came over. She was like, ‘Don’t bully Ardal’. And we were like, ‘We’re not bullying him, he’s like a national treasure!’ Cause we had to like go for it in the scene.”

This has been in the works for quite some time too. Creator of Derry Girls Lisa McGee said this about the Monaghan man during the summer: “I absolutely love Ardal O’Hanlon. I love him, and we’ve worked with him before. He just has that real unique thing that you just love watching him. He’s funny and you like him, he has that likeability.”

There is no release date for Season 2 of Derry Girls just yet, all we know is that it is “coming soon”.

Tomorrow would suit us nicely…
