Check to see how many of these you've seen... or are on your to-watch list...
We're heading into the second half of 2023, so now is a good time to take stock of the year so far. We've already checked in on the most popular Netflix movies and shows of the first six months of the year, so these lists will be looking at the other popular streaming services.
The following lists are compiled by data from Flix Patrol, and is exclusively from data for Irish customers of Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV+.
So start marking up your lists to check off which ones you've already watched, and which you are missing out on...
DISNEY+ MOST POPULAR MOVIES:
1. Moana2. Encanto3. Frozen4. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever5. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania6. Avatar: The Way Of Water7. Strange World8. Avatar9. The Menu
Unsurprisingly, the top three positions are filled with modern animated classics, proving that Disney+ might be the greatest invention for families with children of a certain age.
On the flip side, alongside the list of beloved cartoons, huge Marvel movies and the Avatar franchise, it is great to see a nasty little gem like The Menu crack the list.
DISNEY+ SHOWS:
1. Grey's Anatomy2. Modern Family3. Family Guy4. The Simpsons5. Bluey6. Criminal Minds7. The Mandalorian8. The Walking Dead9. The Kardashians10. NCIS
Where the movies are kept on a repeated loop to keep the kids happy, it appears the same idea is in place with the shows... but for the adults. The only true Disney+ original here is The Mandalorian, with pretty much all of the rest existing before the arrival of Disney's streaming service.
AMAZON PRIME MOST POPULAR MOVIES:
1. Everything Everywhere All At Once2. Mindcage3. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre4. Air5. Shotgun Wedding6. Creed II7. Bastille Day8. Guy Ritchie's The Covenant9. The Suicide Squad10. Triangle of Sadness
A pretty strong mix here of Amazon Prime exclusives and licensed titles, including the most recent Best Picture Oscar winner topping the list.
Mind you, we've never even heard of that movie that arrived in the No.2 position...
AMAZON PRIME SHOWS:
1. Clarkson's Farm2. Reacher3. Jack Ryan's Tom Clancy4. Daisy Jones & The Six5. Star Trek Picard6. Citadel7. The Power8. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel9. The Rig10. Hunters
Much like The Rings Of Power when it arrived, Prime Video's most expensive shows are barely making a dent in the way they might have hoped, as proven by Citadel's positioning, despite reportedly being the second most expensive TV show ever made.
APPLE TV+ MOST POPULAR MOVIES:
1. Ghosted2. Tetris3. Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie4. Sharper5. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse6. Spirited7. Emancipation
Yes, their top movie is among our worst movies of 2023 so far list, but beyond that, the rest of this list is pretty solid, if a little ... uninspired?
APPLE TV+ SHOWS:
1. Ted Lasso2. Bad Sisters3. The Morning Show4. Shrinking5. Slow Horses6. Silo7. The Last Thing He Told Me8. Black Bird9. The Big Door Prize10. Truth Be Told
We've been telling anyone who will listen that Apple TV+ has the highest hit rate for a TV streaming service in Ireland - HBO and HBO Max don't have a direct outlet in Ireland - and that is because they have such an incredibly varied and high quality offering.
