One of the best Westerns of all time.

The Personal History of David Copperfield – Channel 4 – 9.20pm

Our pick for tonight is based on the classic novel David Copperfield by Charles Dickens.

Set in the 19th century, the comedy-drama chronicles the life of the titular character (Dev Patel) from his unhappy childhood to the discovery of his gift as a storyteller and writer.

Co-written and directed by the acclaimed Armando Ianucci (In the Loop, The Death of Stalin), the filmmaker puts a greater emphasis on the humour of Dickens’ writing than most adaptations of the author’s work.

It’s this, combined with an incredible cast – including Ben Whishaw, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi and Tilda Swinton – all giving big and energetic performances, that leaves the film feeling funnier and livelier than you might expect.

Network – TG4 – 9.20pm

This Oscar-winning black comedy-drama follows a television network and its struggle with poor ratings.

The Shape of Water – RTÉ One – 9.45pm

A Best Picture winner at the 2017 Oscars, this wonderful fantasy romance centres on a lonely janitor (Sally Hawkins) working at a top-secret research facility in the 1960s who forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature (Doug Jones) being held in captivity.

Revenge – Horror Channel – 10.50pm

In this incredibly stylish and extremely violent French thriller, a young woman assaulted and left for dead in the desert by three men recovers and seeks vengeance upon her attackers.

Sea Fever – Film4 – 11.20pm

This claustrophobic Irish sci-fi horror-thriller follows the crew of a marooned Irish fishing trawler as they find themselves threatened by a parasitic infection.

Deepwater Horizon – Channel 4 – 11.40pm

Mark Wahlberg leads the cast of this disaster film based on true events.

Pacific Rim – Turner Classic Movies – 11.55pm

A rip-roaring sci-fi action blockbuster about gigantic humanoid mechas fighting alien monsters.

Going in Style – RTÉ One – 12am

Alan Arkin, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman team up to rob a bank in this comedy-caper.

Mindhorn – BBC One – 12.10am
