LISTEN: Matthew McConaughey was in absolutely flying form speaking Irish and telling stories of Dublin on Today FM

Alan Loughnane

He seems like an absolutely great guy…

Matthew McConaughey has a reputation of being one of the nice guys of Hollywood and in recent interviews, he’s certainly come across that way.

It must be said that his climb back after an almost endless string of forgettable romcoms to become one of the most in-demand and respected actors in Hollywood in the space of a few short years is something to be admired.

Hence, the famous Matthew McConaissance.

The Dallas Buyers Club star was on The Dermot and Dave Show this morning to discuss the release of his new film Gold, where he plays Kenny Wells, a prospector desperate for a lucky break, who teams up with a similarly eager geologist and sets off on an amazing journey to find gold in Indonesia.

McConaughey was in flying form on the show as he spoke about one of his most recent visits to Ireland where he had a “wonderful” time.

“I had wonderful time there,” he said. “I was with my buddy there Mark Norby. What’s the Metallica song that’s the cover of the old Irish… Yeah, ‘Whiskey In The Jar’. We met this great bloke on the north side of the Liffey. We were jammin’ one night and my buddy who loves Metallica, [heard them] play that song, and he yells, ‘Yeah! Metallica!’

“The guy who was the lead singer of the band, we knew him quite well, and he goes, ‘You bloody yank, that’s not a bloody Metallica song. It’s been around for years, it’s ours!'”

He also tried out some Irish phrases (including his famous “alright, alright, alright”) in what really was a great interview by Dermot and Dave this morning.
