20th Oct 2022

An Oscar-winning crime drama is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Two of its cast picked up Oscar trophies for their work in the film.

It is Thursday.

That means it is not quite the weekend sadly.

However, you can still kick back on the sofa tonight with a good film.

To help with that, here are the movies airing on TV this evening (20 October).

Knives Out – Film4 – 9pm

With its sequel set for a release next month, perhaps now is a good time to revisit this mystery flick centring around gentleman sleuth Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig).

Lethal Weapon 3 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Danny Glover and Mel Gibson return for this hit buddy cop action sequel.

Harriet – BBC Four – 9pm

Cynthia Erivo received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for playing American abolitionist and social activist Harriet Tubman in this biopic.

Ghosts of Mars – Sky Sci-Fi – 9pm

Critically panned at the time of its release in 2001, this sci-fi horror from director John Carpenter has its defenders.

Bloodline – Horror Xtra – 9pm

A cast against type Seann William Scott (American Pie) stars in this horror thriller as a vigilante serial killer.

Loving – BBC Four – 10.55pm

Irish actress Ruth Negga also earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for this beautiful drama telling the true story of a couple arrested for being in an interracial marriage in ’60s Virginia.

From the Dark – Horror Xtra – 10.55pm

In this 2014 horror, a couple (Niamh Algar and Stephen Cromwell) on a trip through the Irish countryside find themselves hunted by a creature who only attacks at night.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day – ITV4 – 11.05pm

This action-packed sci-fi blockbuster is widely regarded as being one of the best sequels of all time.

Dirty Harry – Turner Classic Movies – 11.25pm

This classic crime thriller from the ’70s follows tough San Francisco police inspector “Dirty” Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) as he attempts to track down a psychopath menacing the city.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – Film4 – 11.40pm

Our pick for tonight, this 2017 movie stars Frances McDormand as a Missouri woman who rents three roadside billboards to draw attention to her daughter’s unsolved murder.

However, the police in the town (represented by Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson) do not take kindly to the billboards, sparking an escalating chain of events.

Written and directed by Martin McDonagh – whose new movie The Banshees of Inisherin arrives in theatres this week – the filmmaker infuses compassion and empathy into what could be a grim story.

It also boasts one of the best ensemble casts of recent years, with McDormand and Rockwell picking up Oscars for their performances in the film.
