Movies & TV

12th Jun 2023

One of the best comedies of the past few years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Shiva Baby

While it is funny, the 96% Rotten Tomatoes scoring movie is also VERY tense.

One of the best-hidden gem shows ever has returned to Netflix, but if you still need more to watch tonight, here is what is airing on TV this evening.

Anna – Film4 – 9pm

Cillian Murphy, Helen Mirren and Luke Evans are among the cast of this action thriller about a young woman (Sasha Luss) who becomes an assassin.

Ransom – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

This terrifically tense ’90s thriller follows a multi-millionaire (Mel Gibson) whose son is kidnapped. After initially agreeing to pay the ransom, the dad then decides to use the money as a bounty on the perpetrators of the crime.

Bad Samaritan – Legend – 9pm

In this 2018 thriller, Robert Sheehan plays a parking valet who burglarises the houses of the drivers he services, only to discover one of his rich customers (David Tennant) is a serial killer.

Tigerland – TG4 – 9.30pm

One of Colin Farrell’s earliest roles, he plays an army draftee opposed to the Vietnam War being trained in the US before he is deployed.

Only You – BBC Three – 9.30pm

Josh O’Connor and Laia Costa star in this critically acclaimed romantic drama as two strangers who meet on New Year’s Eve fighting over a taxi but later start a passionate romance together.

Cobra – ITV4 – 10pm

This silly if solid ’80s action flick with Sylvester Stallone wound up inspiring the Ryan Gosling-starring Drive. You can read about how right here.

Shiva Baby

Rachel Sennott stars in Shiva Baby, our pick for tonight

Brake – Legend – 11.10pm

Stephen Dorff plays a Secret Service Agent held captive in the trunk of a car by terrorists in this Buried-style thriller.

Filth – Film4 – 11.20pm

James McAvoy gives a tour-de-force performance as a depraved and troubled Edinburgh cop in this adaptation of the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting).

Escape from Alcatraz – Turner Classic Movies – 11.35pm

Clint Eastwood leads the cast of this great 70’s thriller which dramatises the 1962 prisoner escape from the maximum-security prison on Alcatraz Island.

Sunshine Cleaning – AMC – 11.45pm

Amy Adams and Emily Blunt star in this well-liked comedy-drama as two sisters who start a crime scene cleanup business.

Shiva Baby – Channel 4 – 1am

Our pick for tonight is the debut feature of writer-director Emma Seligman (the upcoming comedy Bottoms) which sees rising star Rachel Sennott (Bodies Bodies Bodies, The Idol) play Danielle, a directionless young bisexual Jewish woman who attends a shiva with her parents (Fred Melamed and Polly Draper).

To Danielle’s embarrassment, however, also at the mourning are her successful ex-girlfriend (Molly Gordon, Booksmart), her sugar daddy (Danny Deferrari, Oppenheimer) and the latter’s wife (Dianna Agron, Glee).

Though Shiva Baby is on very late tonight, we would recommend recording this indie comedy gem that features a charismatic lead turn by Sennott, a sharp and funny screenplay, and immersive direction that serves to emphasise every awkward encounter that Danielle suffers throughout the tight 78-minute running time.
