Watching this dark gem from 2018 may help whet your appetite for the return of the hit Netflix anthology show later this week.
Amazon Prime Video has just quietly added 22 huge movies to its library, while RTÉ is airing a powerful documentary tonight (13 June).
That said, if you need more to watch, here are the films airing on TV this evening.
Await Further Instructions – Horror Xtra – 9pm
In our movie pick for tonight, an already tense Christmas family gathering in Britain becomes increasingly strained when the clan finds themselves trapped inside their house by a mysterious black substance. This is as their TV begins broadcasting cryptic and increasingly sinister instructions.
Released in 2018 to strong reviews – 81% on Rotten Tomatoes – this sci-fi horror’s claustrophobic bottle setting, societal commentary and representation of the uneasy relationship between humans and technology led several critics to draw comparisons between it and the hit Netflix anthology series Black Mirror.
Given that the latter is back for its sixth season on Thursday (15 June), Await Further Instructions may whet your appetite for the show’s return.
You can check out a trailer for the film right here:
Mad Max 2 – ITV4 – 9pm
Widely regarded as Mel Gibson’s best outing as the post-apocalyptic warrior ‘Mad’ Max Rockatansky.
Parenthood – Comedy Central – 9pm
Steve Martin leads a terrific ensemble cast in this acclaimed ’80s family comedy-drama.
White House Down – Film4 – 9pm
Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx headline this White House-set action flick that is arguably better than the similarly premised Olympus Has Fallen which came out the same year.
Fire Down Below – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm
Steven Seagal is the lead in this critically panned eco-action flick from the ’90s.
An Eye for an Eye – Legend – 9pm
Chuck Norris plays an undercover narcotics cop in San Francisco aiming to avenge his partner’s death and destroy a drug-smuggling ring in this ’80s crime movie.
Kill Your Friends – AMC – 10.55pm
Possible future Superman Nicholas Hoult stars in this satirical thriller and novel adaptation as an A&R man working at the height of the Britpop music craze who goes to extremes in order to find his next hit.
Prince of Darkness – Sky Sci-Fi – 11.05pm
From legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter, Prince of Darkness follows a group of scientists in LA who are asked to assist a Catholic priest (Donald Pleasence) in investigating an ancient cylinder of liquid discovered in a monastery. However, they soon come to learn that the mysterious substance is in fact the essence of Satan.
War – Turner Classic Movies – 11.10pm
An action film that should be a lot more exciting given the involvement of Jason Statham and Jet Li.
Deepwater Horizon – Film4 – 11.35pm
Mark Wahlberg stars in this well-reviewed biographical disaster film based on the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
