One of the best noirs of all time is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It boasts a legendary supporting turn from Orson Welles.

Looking to kick back and relax this Thursday evening?

Well, you’re in luck as there are a couple of great flicks airing on the telly tonight.

Here’s your options.

The Third Man – BBC Four – 8pm

In our pick for this evening, pulp novelist Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) arrives in post-war Vienna to accept a job with his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) but is told that his pal has died.

Viewing the death as suspicious, Martins stays in the city to investigate the matter.

With a twisty screenplay by acclaimed novelist Graham Greene, atmospheric monochrome cinematography and a scene-stealing late-in-the-game turn from Welles at his most devilishly charismatic, The Third Man is widely considered one of the best noir films ever made.

Diamonds Are Forever – ITV 4 – 8pm

The second last time Sean Connery played 007.

We Own the Night – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

A nightclub owner (Joaquin Phoenix) in late ’80s New York is caught in the middle of a war between cops and criminals after his policeman brother (Mark Wahlberg) is attacked by the Russian mafia.

Atmospheric and tense, this crime thriller from writer-director James Gray (Ad Astra) is a must-watch for fans of the genre.

The Equalizer – Film4 – 9pm

Denzel Washington brings his trademark gravitas to this solid cinematic reboot of the popular ’80s spy thriller show.

The Inbetweeners 2 – E4 – 9pm

The gang return for another holiday, this time heading to Australia.

Young Winston – True Movies – 9pm

Sadly not a New Girl prequel but a biopic about Winston Churchill.

I, Tonya – BBC Four – 10pm

For those currently enjoying Pam & Tommy, its executive producer Craig Gillespie and star Sebastian Stan had previously teamed up for this other comedy-drama based on a true story.

In it, Margot Robbie stars as controversial figure skater Tonya Harding.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day – ITV 4 – 10.40pm

The second and arguably best of the franchise.

The Brood – Horror Channel – 10.55pm

An early body horror from master of the sub-genre David Cronenberg (The Fly, Videodrome).

The Girl on the Train – Film4 – 11.40pm

Emily Blunt stars in this watchable adaptation of the hit mystery novel of the same name.

The Swimmer – True Movies – 11.50pm

In this acclaimed cult film starring Burt Lancaster, a man spends a summer day swimming in as many pools as he can all over a quiet suburban town.
