Movies on TV Wednesday 29 December

Hey hey, it’s Wednesday.

No, really, it is.

You’d be forgiven for having no idea what day it actually is.

And yet, it is indeed Wednesday.

A day for movies, perhaps?

Here’s the best available on the box this evening…

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – RTÉ 2 – 5.45pm

The third one.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – ITV2 – 6.15pm

People really hate Andrew Garfield’s second shot at Spidey.

This writer thinks it’s… fine.

The Bourne Identity – RTÉ 2 – 9pm

The first one.

A Star is Born – BBC One – 9pm

Our main pick for you tonight.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper fall in love against the backdrop of duelling music stardom in one of most successful box office smashes of recent years.

The story focuses on a young woman (Gaga) who looks to realise her musical dream when a charismatic but troubled troubadour (Cooper) takes her under his wing.

Warning – you’ll shed a tear or two.

Ghost – Sky Showcase – 9pm

Swayze! Moore! Pottery!

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw – ITV2 – 9pm

The Rock and The Stath team up.

Role Models – Comedy Central – 9pm

Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott combine for comedy action.

Jonah Hex – Turner Classic Movies / TCM – 9pm

Long before he was Thanos and Cable, Josh Brolin tried his hand at comic book adventure with this ‘hacked to death by the studio’ adaptation of a monstrous western.

Taken 3 – Film4 – 9pm

The third one.

The Mechanic – Virgin Media Two – 10pm

Jason Statham teaches Ben Foster’s young protégé what it truly means to be a calculated assassin.

Heyday – The Mic Christopher Story – TG4 – 10.15pm

New documentary that chronicles the life and times of sadly departed singer-songwriter Mic Christopher.

JOE recently caught up with the filmmakers for a look behind the scenes of the project – you can check that out here.

Face / Off – ITV4 – 10.25pm

John Travolta and Nicolas Cage – both of whom get to overact to a legendary degree – do battle as long-time arch rivals who suddenly get to trade lives thanks to the wonders of late 90s technology.

You know this one very well, right? It rules!

We Own The Night – TCM – 10.45pm

Underrated thriller in which a nightclub owner with criminal ties (Joaquin Phoenix) must choose between that business and the law enforcement life of his family, headed up by Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall.

Dublin Oldschool – RTÉ 2 – 11.10pm

Emmet Kirwan takes his acclaimed play to the screen, as two estranged brothers look to reconnect amidst difficult cirumstances.

Midnight Run – Film4 – 11.15pm

Classic action comedy with Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin.

Withnail & I – TG4 – 12.45am

They’ve gone on holiday by mistake.

The Ugly Truth – RTÉ 2 – 12.55am

Gerard Butler and Katharine Heigl, neither of whom could ever be considered ugly, star in this generic enough romantic comedy.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie – BBC Two – 12.55am

They made a movie out of this?

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – Channel 4 – 1.45am

A blockbuster disaster so colossal it effectively led to the retirement of director Stephen Norrington and lead star Sean Connery.

Monos – Film4 – 1.50am

One of the most visually stunning war films ever made.
