We very nearly had another “guy falling on ice” moment on RTÉ News on Sunday

Alan Loughnane

Nice save…

One of the most famous moments RTÉ News history is the moment a man fell on the ice during the severe cold snap all the way back in 2010.

Come on, you know which one we’re talking about…

But we very nearly had another moment similar to this on RTÉ’s Six One news on Sunday, when the broadcaster was capturing some B Roll footage of people descending from Croagh Patrick.

As some of you may know, it was Reek Sunday this weekend and thousands of pilgrims turned out to make the trek up and down the famous Mayo mountain.

It was a dangerous day on the mountain as Mayo Mountain Rescue confirmed that they had at least a dozen call outs for injuries on the climb, including one man needing to be airlifted to hospital after suffering a heart attack.

A tricky descent was made even more difficult in damp conditions with the ground and rocks very slippery underfoot for descenders.

One guy had a hairy moment but showed some swift footwork to ensure that he remained vertical, despite what we assume was a moment of blind panic.

He came very close to being the new “The guy that fell on Croagh Patrick on RTÉ”.

Cheers to Damien Caulfield for the heads up on this.
